The Discomfort of Sweet Comfort Foods

Sharing is caring!

For ages mothers across the world have been telling children “too much sugar will give you cavities”.  Then eventually medical science discovered that it will also “give you” obesity and diabetes. We have long known the risk of a high-sugar diet and the way it impacts our physical health. Sugary foods have also been well known as “feel good” foods; the type of things we go to when we are feeling a little blue or under increased stress. We often sit in front of our TV or devices, kick of our shoes from a long day and take a load off with something nice and sugary to eat and/or drink. We get that instant feeling of relief and in that moment we actually feel better, just to do it all again the next day. Men and women both find pleasure it sweet goodness, especially this time of the year. This is why it was very disappointing to find out that this short-term and temporary relief of a bad mood may actually be contributing to our long-term, over-all mood. Recent studies have found that men who consume a high-sugar diet have a 23% increase in depression and anxiety. However, the question remains if it is the sugar that is causing this increase, or is it because men who suffer with depression and anxiety are more likely to consume more sugar. Whatever the case may be, this is just one more thing to yield caution and moderation when choosing what we eat this holiday season and throughout the year.

Stay healthy and beautiful, and have a happy holiday!
